Palatal Expander

A palatal expander is a specialized orthodontic appliance designed to gradually widen the upper jaw. By applying gentle pressure to the upper molars, the appliance helps create additional space for developing teeth, improve bite alignment, and support healthy jaw growth.

Palatal expanders are commonly used in growing children and teens to correct crossbites, reduce crowding, and create a healthier foundation for future orthodontic treatment. Once the desired expansion is achieved, the appliance remains in place for several months to allow the bone and surrounding tissues to stabilize and prevent relapse.

Why Is a Palatal Expander Needed?

A narrow upper jaw can contribute to several orthodontic concerns, including:

  • Crowded teeth
  • Crossbites
  • Impacted teeth
  • Improper jaw development
  • Difficulty achieving proper bite alignment

Expanding the upper jaw early can often reduce the need for more complex treatment later and create room for permanent teeth to erupt properly.

How Does a Palatal Expander Work?

The appliance contains a small expansion screw located in the center of the roof of the mouth. Using a special key, the screw is adjusted according to your orthodontist’s instructions. Each adjustment applies gentle pressure that gradually widens the upper jaw over time.

Although patients may feel slight pressure for a few moments after an adjustment, the process is generally comfortable and well tolerated.

How Do I Activate My Palatal Expander?

Follow these simple steps each time an adjustment is required.

Step 1: Position the Patient Properly

Choose a well-lit area and have the patient tilt their head back comfortably. Good lighting will make it easier to see the appliance and locate the adjustment hole.

Step 2: Insert the Expansion Key

Carefully place the expansion key into the visible hole in the center screw. Make sure the key is fully seated and securely positioned before turning.

Step 3: Complete the Adjustment

Gently push the key toward the back of the mouth. As the key rotates, the expansion screw will turn and a new hole will begin to appear. Continue the motion until the key reaches the back of the expander and the rotation naturally stops.

Step 4: Remove the Key Correctly

Once the adjustment is complete, carefully remove the key by pushing it backward and downward toward the tongue. The next adjustment hole should now be visible and ready for the following activation.

What Should I Expect During Expansion?

It is normal to experience mild pressure around the teeth, nose, or roof of the mouth immediately after an adjustment. This feeling typically lasts only a few minutes.

Many patients also notice:

  • Increased spacing between the front teeth
  • Mild pressure around the cheeks or nose
  • Temporary changes in speech
  • Increased saliva production during the first few days

These changes are expected and indicate that the appliance is working properly.

How Long Will My Child Wear a Palatal Expander?

The active expansion phase typically lasts several weeks, depending on the amount of correction needed. After expansion is complete, the appliance usually remains in place for several months to allow the newly expanded jaw to stabilize.

This retention period is just as important as the expansion itself and helps ensure long-term success.

Frequently Asked Questions

Below are answers to some of the most common questions families ask about palatal expansion, treatment timelines, costs, and daily life with an expander.

In some cases, yes—but usually in subtle and positive ways. As the upper jaw expands, facial balance may improve and the smile may appear broader. These changes are generally gradual and help create a healthier bite and more balanced smile.

Missing an occasional adjustment is usually not an emergency, but it’s important to contact our office for guidance. Following the prescribed activation schedule helps ensure treatment progresses as planned and achieves the desired results.

The cost depends on your child’s individual treatment needs and whether the expander is part of a larger orthodontic treatment plan. During your consultation, we’ll provide a detailed breakdown of costs and discuss all available payment options.

Yes. Delta Smiles Orthodontics provides palatal expanders and early orthodontic treatment for children throughout Antioch, Brentwood, Oakley, Discovery Bay, Pittsburg, and surrounding East Bay communities.

Traditional palatal expanders are most commonly used for children and adolescents. Adult treatment options may be different because jaw growth is complete. An orthodontic consultation can determine which treatment approach is best for your specific needs.
